What's in a name

If you have ever had children you are probably aware of the delight in choosing a name but also the pressure that comes with that responsibility.

We have chosen Leah for our daughter. It is a Biblical name and you can read about leah in Genesis 29&30. If you read the story (or if you are familiar with it perhaps from sunday school days) you may begin to wonder why you would choose Leah as a name. She is described as not being as good looking as her sister Rachel, her marriage comes about through the deceit of her father and she ends up being unloved by her husband. As you read you get swept up in the tragic Romeo Juliet style love story and tend to side with Rachel and are happy when it works out for her and Jacob.

But take a closer look and you see what is going on. There is a lot of human sin: Jacob is the ultimate schemer but on this occassion he is outdown by his uncle Laban and is tricked into marrying Leah first. Leah is angry because she is not loved by her husband and then because leah bears Jacob children Rachel is filled with jealousy and that brings about scheming between the two wives which eventually involves the servant maids.

Yet despite all this human sin God's grace is wonderfully displayed. He is working out his purposes and we see evidence for that as Leah becomes the mother of the priestly line of Levi and the messianic line of Judah - from whom is descended Jesus!!

Besides all that, we love the name, it goes well with Ramsey and Luke Thompson needs a princess!
